Bulletin 2024 Week 32

Monday August 5th, 2024

The Edinburgh Festival kicked off at the end of last week. Welcome to any technology enthusiasts who will be visiting the country!

Ljupche has posted a video on 5 ways your AWS architecture might be vulnerable, and CodeBase published TechScaler takeaways: tales from Silcon Valley.

Edinburgh was in the news with the as the UK Govt shelved plans for an £800m exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh. I asked the Secretary of State for Scotland and local MP Ian Murray for comment. His office replied with blurb that has been reported elsewhere that: “There was no new funding for the above programmes allocated at the time in government spending plans and therefore will not be taken forward”. I further asked if Ian Murray had been involved or consulted on the decision either as the Secretary of State or as the local MP. His office replied “Nothing to add to the statement below”. Scott Arthur MP said that it wasn’t a cancellation if the money wasn’t there in the first place. If you are an AI researcher then please do let me know: what you think the impact of this might be? Matt Clifford is now in charge of heading up UK Govt policy for AI state capacity.

As it’s a quiet period for meetups I’m spending my time organising the next few JavaScript meetups for September, and reworking the website. If you have feedback on what would be most useful for you to see (meetups, lists, links, videos, people) then please do drop me an email or reach out on the Discord or socials.
